Course Description

This course is designed to prepare students to the blessed month of Ramadan with an understanding of the virtues of this blessed month and an introduction to the chapters of Fasting, Tarawih, I’tikaf , Zakat al-Fitr and Salat al ‘Id according to the school of Imam of Madina al-Munawwara, Malik ibn Anas RA, making occasional reference to differences with other schools of fiqh. The students will get to know the essential matters of Fiqh related to the aforementioned issues, and much more. A session will be devoted to the commentary of Surat al-Qadr and the virtues of Laylatul-Qadr (the Night of Destiny).

This is an introductory level suitable for beginners but also beneficial to students of all levels. The main sourcebooks of this course will be the chapter on Fasting, Zakat al-Fitr and Salat al ‘Id of the Murshid al-Mu’in of Ibn ‘Ashir and the Risala of al-Qayrawani and their commentaries. Reference will be also made to Aqrab al-Masalik and its commentaries, Mukhtasar of Khalil and its commentaries, Al-Qawanin al-Fiqhiyya of Ibn Juzay, Maraqi as-Sa’adat and Nur al-Idah of ash-Shurumbulali al-Hanafi, as well as other modern and authoritative Fiqh works. As for Tafsir (Qur’an commentary), it will be drawn from Tafsir al-Jalalayn and its Hashiya by as-Sawi, At-Tashil of Ibn Juzay, Tafsir of al-Khazin and from other classical authoritative sources.

Course Information:

Classes last 60 minutes. Students will be able to view the sessions on a ‘Wiziq’ platform and download the recording of the session along with the instructor’s notes in the presentation.

I. Virtues of the month of Ramadan, fasting and its legal categories, determining the time of Ramadan.

II. Obligations and conditions of fasting, impediments of fasting, disliked elements of fasting.

III. Recommended elements of fasting, breaking an obligatory fast, Tarawih.

IV. Laylatul-Qadr (Tafsir of Sura al-Qadr).

V., Virtues of I’tikaf, breaking a recommended fast, expiation.

VI. Zakat al-Fitr, Salat al-‘Id.
